The short answer

The nine games at a glance

What links We Happy Few and Fallout 4 is not their combat math; it is the eerie contrast between smiling mid century advertising, upbeat television jingles and a society that has completely collapsed underneath. As a solo developer in Istanbul building Iron Curtain Call, I built my alternate 1965 World War III around that exact comedic and visual tension: every wall carries smiling state slogans while a customer service machine called the Supreme Chancellor sends wind up tin soldiers to eliminate you.

If you want the direct mid century British or American retro dystopia where smiling citizens and household robots hide a collapsed state, start with We Happy Few ($59.99), Fallout 4 ($19.99) and Atomic Heart ($59.99, free demo on Steam). If you want linear, story driven first person campaigns through fallen ideological cities, play BioShock Remastered ($19.99), BioShock Infinite ($29.99), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus ($39.99, free demo) and Dishonored ($9.99). If you want a compact Cold War mystery between East Berlin and a robot city, play INDUSTRIA ($19.99). And if you want a fast 1930s rubber hose cartoon shooter set in an absurd 1965 propaganda war, try the free Steam demo or 60 second browser trial of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want a 1960s propaganda dystopia played as a fast 1930s rubber hose cartoon shooter.

In Iron Curtain Call, it is 1965, World War III has started, and the Supreme Chancellor runs the war like a polite telephone helpdesk while wind up tin robots march through Rubbleton. Instead of crafting bandages or managing hunger bars, you dash, grapple, parry and punch through twelve theatrical chapters. Mission 1 is free on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a 60 second trial runs in your browser.

Why cheerful propaganda works in FPS games

Why a smiling poster is creepier and funnier than a skull on a spike

Grimdark shooters wear out their welcome when every corridor is brown rust and skulls. Mid century retro dystopias like We Happy Few, Fallout, BioShock and Iron Curtain Call stay memorable because the environment is constantly lying to you: a cheerful poster promises a bright tomorrow while the robot in front of you tries to take your head off.

Questions

Questions players ask about games like We Happy Few and Fallout

Which games like We Happy Few and Fallout have a free demo on Steam right now?

Three games on this page have a free playable demo on Steam right now: Iron Curtain Call (Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a 60 second browser trial), Atomic Heart and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.

Is We Happy Few a linear shooter like BioShock?

We Happy Few ($59.99) combines procedural survival stealth with three story acts; if you want a purely linear shooter with that same 1960s propaganda satire, play BioShock Remastered ($19.99), Wolfenstein II ($39.99) or the free demo of Iron Curtain Call.

What PC and indie games are coming out in 2027?

More than one page can hold: Steam shows a lot of PC and indie games with a 2027 date, and dates keep moving. What we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026 are the shooters and the Mac action games, in two dated lists: upcoming FPS games and upcoming Mac games. Iron Curtain Call, our own cartoon noir shooter, is due 11 March 2027 on Windows and macOS, and its free demo is on Steam now.

What games release on 11 March 2027?

Among the shooters we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026: Blood of Rations (11 March 2027) and Iron Curtain Call (My game, 11 March 2027). We only checked shooters, so this is not the full set for that day; Steam’s own Coming Soon page has the rest.

What is a good new single player FPS I can play for free right now?

Iron Curtain Call has a free demo on Steam (Mission 1, about 15 to 20 minutes) and a free 60 second browser trial with no download. It is a single player cartoon noir shooter, and it is our game, so weigh that. For other free shooters, our list of free FPS demos on Steam holds the best rated ones.
