Iron Curtain Call in first person: snow covered Soviet style apartment blocks, propaganda banners and robot patrols in Kelvingrad
Iron Curtain Call, chapter 5, Kelvingrad: apartment blocks, loudspeaker propaganda and a silent soldier pushing forward.
The short answer

Loudspeakers in the square, a crowbar or a punch in your hand.

Valve’s Half-Life 2 (16 November 2004, $9.99, free demo on Steam) set the template for the story driven PC shooter: a silent protagonist steps off a train into an Eastern European police state where a smiling face on giant screens tells citizens that everything is fine, and every chapter introduces a new weapon or environmental twist without cutting away from your eyes.

If you want the closest direct relatives on Steam, start with Crowbar Collective’s Black Mesa ($19.99, released 6 March 2020), Bleakmill’s Cold War dimension hopping shooter INDUSTRIA ($19.99) and the solo built Eastern European shooter VLADiK BRUTAL ($11.99, released 9 August 2024).

If you want that chapter by chapter journey through a loudspeaker regime, played at fast cartoon boomer shooter speed with a free demo you can try right now, play Mission 1 of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027 on Windows and macOS, with the free demo on Linux too and a 60 second browser version). For full AAA scale, pair it with Metro Exodus ($29.99), Wolfenstein: The New Order ($19.99), Atomic Heart ($59.99, free demo), BioShock Remastered ($19.99) and Selaco ($24.99).

Ten campaigns for Half-Life 2 fans

Each card explains how the game carries forward Half-Life 2’s chapter pacing, oppressive worldbuilding or environmental combat.

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you love stepping off a train into a dystopian city where giant screens lecture you, and want a faster, funnier shooter with a free demo.

In Iron Curtain Call you play Corporal Punishment, a silent soldier who never speaks a word while Colonel Panic barks over your radio and the Supreme Chancellor (a customer service machine that was handed a country) lectures citizens from every loudspeaker and billboard across 12 chapters.

Chapter 1, Welcome to Rubbleton, starts with a crashed cargo transport and the 6:15 Express steam train before sending you through snowy Kelvingrad apartment blocks, Expo 65 pavilions and a lunar launch pad. Instead of a crowbar, your Knuckle Sandwich punch heals you and the Can Opener saw cracks wind up robots open for ammo.

Play Mission 1 in the free Steam demo (Windows, macOS, Linux) or try 60 seconds in your browser.

Half-Life 2

The landmark · City 17 and the Gravity Gun · Free demo

Play it if you want the timeless original on Windows, macOS or Linux.

Released by Valve on 16 November 2004 ($9.99, free demo on Steam), Half-Life 2 remains unmatched in how seamlessly it moves from apartment block raids and canal chases to Ravenholm’s sawblades and the Nova Prospekt prison assault.

Dr. Breen’s polite, paternal television broadcasts across City 17 wrote the rulebook for every dystopian shooter that followed.

Still runs effortlessly on almost any PC; see our FPS games for low end PCs guide.

Crowbar Collective released Black Mesa 1.0 on 6 March 2020 ($19.99, Windows and Linux) after more than a decade of craft. It rebuilds the original 1998 campaign from the tram ride to the Nihilanth, turning the once frustrating Xen chapters into a breathtaking alien world.

INDUSTRIA

1989 East Berlin · Cold War mystery and robots

Play it if you loved City 17’s Eastern European architecture and want a concentrated four hour sci fi mystery.

German indie team Bleakmill released INDUSTRIA on 30 September 2021 ($19.99). On the evening of 9 November 1989, as the Berlin Wall opens, researcher Nora steps through a secret East Berlin laboratory device into a silent, sunlit parallel city patrolled by hostile machines.

Its cobblestone streets, tramlines and towering cables clearly channel Viktor Antonov’s City 17 design.

Short and atmospheric; see our Cold War FPS games guide for more.
