The best FPS games for Mac, checked on Steam for Apple chips and Intel

By Whale Development Studios, the studio behind Iron Curtain Call, which comes to macOS and Windows on the same day. Published 5 November 2026. Every date, price, platform and demo below, and every line about Mac, was read on the US Steam store on 5 November 2026; the sources are listed at the end.

The short answer

Ten FPS games with a Mac version, and what each Steam page says.

On 5 November 2026, ten first person shooters on Steam listed macOS next to Windows: Iron Curtain Call (ours), Dying Light, Metro Exodus, Borderlands 2, BioShock Remastered, SUPERHOT, Prodeus, DUSK, Wizordum and Shadow Warrior. Steam shows macOS only when a game has a Mac version, so none of them needs Windows in between.

Players report the most native Mac play on Apple Silicon for Dying Light, Metro Exodus and Borderlands 2. For old school shooting on a Mac try Prodeus, DUSK and Wizordum, and for a free taste of a shooter that is still to come, Iron Curtain Call’s demo runs on macOS. Which games name an Apple chip and which only name Intel is in how to read this list.

Not here: Counter Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2 and Portal 2. Steam listed no Mac version for them on 5 November 2026.

At a glance

The games

One by one, who each is for.

Ours first, then the others in order of how many players have reported their Mac play on MacGamingDB. The facts under each entry come from its Steam page on 5 November 2026; the mechanics from its Steam page and its Wikipedia article. Frame rates are players’ own reports, with the number of reports beside them.

Iron Curtain Call

Our game

Play it if you want a fast shooter that Steam says needs an Apple processor, free to try first.

Iron Curtain Call is a fast first person shooter drawn like a 1930s rubber hose cartoon. It is 1965, World War III has broken out, and you punch, dash and grapple your way through an army of wind up tin robots run by a customer service machine called the Supreme Chancellor. A Knuckle Sandwich punch gives you health, the Can Opener cracks a robot open for ammo and the Hot Take shoulder flamethrower feeds your armor; robots burst into bolts, springs and scrap, and there is no blood.

On Mac, the Steam page for the full game says it requires an Apple processor. Its minimum macOS and the rest of the requirements are on the Steam page, in its system requirements, which we leave to the store so they cannot go stale here. The free demo runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

The free demo is Mission 1, Welcome to Rubbleton: about 15 to 20 minutes, ending with the first boss, Major Disaster. On 5 November 2026 no Mac player had posted a report on MacGamingDB yet, so there is no frame rate to quote.

Dying Light

Play it if you want zombies, parkour and a world to roam, with weapon fights and parkour.

Techland’s Dying Light is a first person action survival game in an open world city overrun by the infected. You scavenge, craft weapons and run across rooftops; Wikipedia notes the zombies are slow by day and very aggressive at night.

Steam’s Mac minimum is macOS 10.12.1 with an Intel Core i5, and its note says only AMD Radeon graphics cards are officially supported; no Apple chip is named. On MacGamingDB, 12 of 15 reports are of native play on Apple Silicon, at a median of 75 fps.

Metro Exodus

Play it if you want a big story driven shooter and a Mac with plenty of memory.

Metro Exodus follows Artyom out of the Moscow Metro on a year long journey across Russia aboard a locomotive. Wikipedia describes a mix of several small open world areas and more linear levels like the earlier games in the series.

Steam’s Mac requirements ask for 16 GB of memory in both the minimum and the recommended line. The minimum names macOS 10.15 and an Intel Core i7 7820; the recommended line adds a Radeon RX 5700 XT “or Apple M1 based Mac computers”. On MacGamingDB, 7 of 8 reports are of native play on Apple Silicon, at a median of 60 fps.

Borderlands 2

Play it if you want loot, jokes and a friend to shoot with.

Gearbox’s Borderlands 2 is, in Wikipedia’s words, an action role playing first person shooter. A procedurally generated loot system hands out weapons and gear, and you can play offline in split screen, alone or online with others.

Steam lists a Mac version made by Aspyr with a minimum of macOS 10.12 and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; it names no Apple chip. On MacGamingDB, 7 of 8 reports are of native play on Apple Silicon, at a median of 60 fps.

BioShock Remastered

Play it if you want a classic story shooter and are happy to check the Mac requirements first.

BioShock Remastered is the shooter where you fight with revolvers, shotguns and grenade launchers and with powers you gain by changing your own DNA, as Steam describes it. Wikipedia’s article on BioShock has the history.

Steam lists the minimum as macOS 10.12.5 with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, and its supported Macs are named by Intel era model, from iMacs and MacBook Pros to Mac Pros. No Apple chip is named. MacGamingDB has only 3 reports, all of native play, on M4 and M4 Pro Macs, with little frame rate data, and flags it as limited.

SUPERHOT

Play it if you want to plan every move, not twitch through it.

SUPERHOT is a first person shooter where time moves at normal speed only when you move, which Wikipedia says turns the fights into something like a strategy game. The look is minimal: red enemies, black weapons, white rooms.

Steam lists macOS 10.13 or later, an Intel Core i5 and 8 GB of memory as the minimum; no Apple chip is named. MacGamingDB has 2 reports, of native play on M2 and M2 Pro at 60 fps, and says that is too few for a reliable verdict.

Prodeus

Play it if you want the old shooters, rebuilt with modern lighting.

Bounding Box Software’s Prodeus is, by its Steam description, a first person shooter of old re imagined with modern rendering, with the look and rules of older hardware. Wikipedia notes it was crowdfunded on Kickstarter.

Its Mac requirements are thin: the operating system line says only “OS X”, the processor is a 2 GHz chip with four cores and the graphics line names an NVidia GTX 580 or an AMD HD 7870. No chip family is named, so we mark it not checked. MacGamingDB has 1 report, of native play on an M1 Max at 120 fps, and says one report is not a reliable verdict.

DUSK

Play it if you want fast, dark, old school shooting.

David Szymanski’s DUSK is a retro first person shooter inspired by the 90s legends, in Steam’s words. Wikipedia says it was praised for its retro gameplay, dark atmosphere and throwback graphics.

Steam’s Mac minimum is macOS 10.11, a 2.2 GHz dual core processor and a 64 bit system; the recommended line names an Intel Core i3 or higher. MacGamingDB had no reports from Mac players on 5 November 2026, so we have no frame rate to quote, and we mark the chip as not checked.

Wizordum

Play it if you want a retro shooter built around spells, with a free demo to try.

Emberheart Games’ Wizordum is a retro first person shooter in which you play a mage with a wide arsenal of spells and magic items, a blend, Steam says, of classic 90s shooters and modern touches.

It is one of the few pages on this list that names an Apple chip: the Mac minimum is macOS 11.5 and an Apple M1, with 8 GB of memory. Steam also lists a separate demo that runs on macOS. MacGamingDB had no reports on 5 November 2026.

Shadow Warrior

Play it if you want a katana, a loud hero and a throwback shooter.

Flying Wild Hog’s Shadow Warrior is a reboot of the 1997 shooter of the same name, with the hero Lo Wang, modern graphics and East Asian mythology, and a nod to classic shooters, according to Wikipedia.

Steam lists the Mac minimum as OS X 10.9 and a 2.4 GHz dual core processor, with graphics options that include a GeForce 9600 and an Intel HD 4000. It is an old Mac port: we mark the chip as not checked. MacGamingDB had no reports on 5 November 2026.

How to read this list

Apple chip, Intel or not checked

We write one of three things about each game, and only what we read. Apple chip: its Steam page names an Apple chip in its Mac requirements or says an Apple processor is required. That is Iron Curtain Call and Wizordum on 5 November 2026, and Metro Exodus names Apple M1 based Macs in its recommended line. Intel: the page names only Intel chips or Intel era Macs, as BioShock Remastered, Borderlands 2, Dying Light and SUPERHOT do. Not checked: the page names no chip, as Prodeus, DUSK and Shadow Warrior do.

A Steam page naming an Apple chip is not a test of the files. We did not open any game to see whether its Mac app is built for Apple silicon, so we never write “native Apple silicon” about a game on the strength of a store page alone. “Native” in the frame rates means players ran the Mac version, as MacGamingDB records it.

Apple says that Rosetta translates Intel based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon, that it is available on macOS 27 or earlier, and that from macOS 28 it stays only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel based frameworks. So for the games above whose pages name Intel only, the Steam page and the newest player reports are worth a look before you buy.

The frame rates come from MacGamingDB, where players say how a game runs on their own Mac. They are players’ reports, not our tests and not Steam’s, and the number of reports is next to each one. Few reports means a loose guide.

Questions

Questions Mac players ask

What are the best FPS games for Mac?

Of the ten here, the ones with the most player reports of native play on Apple Silicon Macs on 5 November 2026 were Dying Light, Metro Exodus and Borderlands 2. For old school shooters on a Mac, Prodeus, DUSK and Wizordum are the ones to look at, and our own Iron Curtain Call has a free demo that runs on macOS.

Can a MacBook Air run FPS games?

A MacBook Air has an Apple chip, so the Mac requirements on the Steam page are your first check, and Wizordum and Iron Curtain Call are the two here whose pages ask for an Apple chip. MacGamingDB names the chip in its reports, not the model, and we did not check which were Airs, so we cannot promise a frame rate on one. Try a free demo or the 60 second browser trial on your own Mac first.

Do I need an Apple Silicon Mac for these games?

For Iron Curtain Call and Wizordum, Steam’s pages ask for an Apple chip. The pages of BioShock Remastered, Borderlands 2, Dying Light and SUPERHOT name Intel chips only. Apple says Rosetta can run Intel based apps on Apple silicon Macs on macOS 27 or earlier, so check each Steam page and the latest player reports before you buy.

Is Counter Strike 2 on Mac?

No. On 5 November 2026, Steam listed Windows and Linux, not macOS, for Counter Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, and Windows only for ULTRAKILL and DOOM Eternal. Mac support changes, so the store page has the final word.

Are there free FPS demos for Mac?

Iron Curtain Call’s demo runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and Wizordum has a demo on Steam that lists macOS. You can also play 60 seconds of Iron Curtain Call in your browser on a Mac. The free FPS demos guide lists more.

When does Iron Curtain Call come out on Mac?

On 11 March 2027, with one date for macOS and Windows. Its free demo has been out since 28 October 2026, and the upcoming Mac games list shows the other Mac shooters with a date.

How were these games picked?

Each lists macOS on its Steam page on 5 November 2026 and plays from a first person view built around shooting or, like Dying Light, around fighting. They are ordered by how many players have reported their Mac play on MacGamingDB, so the games with few or no reports come last. Games that Steam files only as role playing games are left out, even when they have a Mac version.
