The short answer

30 great shooters you can try for nothing.

Some of the best loved shooters on Steam still let you play the start for free. ULTRAKILL (Steam players: Overwhelmingly Positive, 217,530 reviews), Half-Life 2 (Overwhelmingly Positive, 204,813) and DOOM (Overwhelmingly Positive, 156,098) all have a free demo, and so do boomer shooters players rate as highly: CULTIC, HROT, MULLET MADJACK and Anger Foot.

36 shooters that are not out yet have a demo too, so you can play them before they launch. Iron Curtain Call is one: its free demo is Mission 1 of a 1930s cartoon war, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Below, the finished games come first, the most reviewed at the top, then the upcoming ones by release date. A click on a name opens the game’s Steam page, where the demo’s download button sits.

The demo we made

Iron Curtain Call

Our game

Play it if you like DOOM style speed and want to see it drawn like a 1930s cartoon, for nothing.

Iron Curtain Call is a fast first person shooter drawn like a 1930s rubber hose cartoon. It is 1965, World War III has broken out, and you punch, dash, grapple and parry your way through an army of wind up tin robots run by a customer service machine called the Supreme Chancellor.

The free demo is Mission 1, Welcome to Rubbleton: about 15 to 20 minutes, from a crashed cargo plane and the 6:15 express to the first boss, Major Disaster. A Knuckle Sandwich punch gives you health, the Can Opener cracks a robot open for ammo and the Hot Take shoulder flamethrower feeds your armor.

The demo runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Not ready to download? Play 60 seconds in your browser.
