The short answer

Some of these run on integrated graphics. Ours needs a card.

Going by each game’s own minimum on Steam, the lightest shooters are the older, retro style ones. Ion Fury says Intel integrated graphics are supported, and HROT asks for an Intel HD 4400, also an integrated part. Half-Life 2 and POSTAL 2 ask for a DirectX 8 level card and 512 MB of RAM or less. DUSK and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour name GeForce cards, a 9800GT and an 8600 GT, with 2 GB of RAM, and ULTRAKILL and Prodeus are the two older games that name a GTX card.

Iron Curtain Call is our own game, so read this part with that in mind. It is the most demanding of the nine: Steam lists a GTX 950 or RX 460 with 2 GB and Vulkan, and 8 GB of RAM, more than any other game here. That is a dedicated card, so do not count on integrated graphics on Windows. On Mac the minimum is an Apple M1, whose graphics are integrated in the chip. There is a Performance mode for minimum spec PCs, and the demo is free on Steam, so you can test your own machine before you spend anything.

Four of the nine had a free demo on Steam on 5 November 2026: Iron Curtain Call, ULTRAKILL, Half-Life 2 and HROT. We did not benchmark any of these games. A minimum is the publisher’s own word for what the game needs to run, not a promise that it runs smoothly.

At a glance

Nine shooters, minimum specs side by side.

The card, RAM and storage cells quote each game’s Steam page, its Windows minimum, on the US store on 5 November 2026; where Steam names no card, the cell says so. Prices are list prices in US dollars before any sale; Steam sets its own prices in other countries. Grouped, not ranked: first ours, then the games whose Steam text points at integrated graphics or a very old card, then the games that name a dedicated card.

The games

One by one, who each is for.

The spec lines under each entry are Steam’s own words for the Windows minimum, read on 5 November 2026; the rest comes from the game’s Steam page and, where there is one, its Wikipedia article. HROT has no English Wikipedia article, so its Steam page is its only source here.

Iron Curtain Call

Our game

Play it if you have a PC with a GTX 950 class card or better, or a Mac with an Apple M1, and want a fast cartoon shooter you can try for free first.

Iron Curtain Call asks for more than the other games on this page, and we would rather say so than hide it. On Windows, Steam lists Windows 10 64 bit, an Intel Core i5 4460 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 950 or RX 460 with 2 GB and Vulkan, and 2 GB of storage. The store page adds that it requires a graphics card with Vulkan support, so integrated graphics are not what the minimum describes on Windows.

For a PC at the minimum, Steam’s notes say to turn on Performance mode in the display settings. On Mac the minimum is macOS 13 Ventura on an Apple M1 with 8 GB of RAM, and Steam calls its graphics an integrated GPU. The game itself is a fast cartoon shooter in an absurd alternate 1965: you punch tin robots for health, they burst into bolts, springs and scrap, and there is no blood.

The free demo is Mission 1, Welcome to Rubbleton: about 15 to 20 minutes, ending with the boss Major Disaster. It does not have the parry; that comes in the full game on 11 March 2027.

Ion Fury

Play it if you have no graphics card to speak of and want a fast, secret packed shooter.

Voidpoint’s Ion Fury, published by 3D Realms, brings back the Build Engine, the engine behind Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood, for fast combat across huge levels full of secrets. Wikipedia says it runs on a modified version of Ken Silverman’s Build engine.

It is the only game here whose Steam text says integrated graphics are supported. The minimum is any 64 bit Intel or AMD processor, 1024 MB of RAM, 512 MB of video memory and 100 MB of storage, on 64 bit Windows. Steam names no graphics card for it.

It asks for no dedicated card and far less RAM than Iron Curtain Call. It had no demo on Steam on 5 November 2026.

HROT

Play it if you have an old laptop with Intel graphics and want a dark, strange retro shooter, with a free demo to try first.

Spytihněv’s HROT is, in Steam’s words, a single player retro FPS set in a small socialist country, Czechoslovakia, after an unspecified disaster, and Steam calls those times dark and terrifying and the game too.

Its Steam minimum is Windows XP, a 2.5 GHz dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM, an Intel HD 4400 and 256 MB of storage. Wikipedia describes Intel’s HD graphics as integrated graphics processors, so this is a game listed for integrated graphics by name, like Ion Fury.

A free demo of it was on Steam on 5 November 2026. It is $19.99, for Windows only.

Half-Life 2

Play it if you want the classic, and your PC is very old or very small.

Valve’s Half-Life 2 sends Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance through the occupied City 17, and Steam calls it a landmark shooter with boundary pushing physics. It has been on Steam since 16 November 2004.

Steam asks for a 1.7 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, a DirectX 8.1 level graphics card that supports SSE, and 6500 MB of storage. It names no card model. Steam also lists a demo for it.

An old game is not always a small one: it asks for 6500 MB of storage, more than Iron Curtain Call’s 2 GB. It is $9.99.

POSTAL 2

Play it if you have the oldest PC of anyone you know, and a taste for black comedy.

Running With Scissors’ POSTAL 2 asks you to live a week as the Postal Dude, a hapless everyman with chores to do. It is a game for adults: Wikipedia says the series is notorious for violence, stereotyping and black comedy.

Steam’s minimum is the lowest on RAM and card in this guide: a Pentium 3 at 1133MHz, 128 MB of RAM, a 32MB GeForce 2 or Radeon video card and DirectX 8.0. It is the highest on storage, at 10 GB of hard drive space, and Steam lists a broadband internet connection under other requirements.

It is $9.99, for Windows and Linux, with no demo on Steam on 5 November 2026.

DUSK

Play it if you have an older gaming PC and want a retro shooter that feels like the 1990s legends.

David Szymanski’s DUSK, published by New Blood Interactive, is a retro FPS inspired by the shooters of the 1990s: you fight backwater cultists, possessed militants and darker forces to find out what lurks beneath the Earth. It has a single player campaign, and Steam also lists multiplayer.

The minimum is Windows 7 or later, a 2.4 GHz dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM, a GeForce 9800GT or equivalent with DirectX 9.0, and 2 GB of storage; 64 bit is recommended and 32 bit is supported. Steam lists a Mac minimum too: macOS 10.11 El Capitan and a card with 512MB of VRAM or greater.

It had no demo on Steam on 5 November 2026. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and costs $19.99.

Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

Play it if you want the loudmouth action hero from the 1990s, and your PC has a modest card.

Duke Nukem 3D first came out in 1996. The 20th Anniversary World Tour, by Gearbox Software and Nerve Software, is the version on Steam, with a new fifth episode, new music and new lines from the original voice of Duke. Steam lists single player and multiplayer.

The minimum is 64 bit Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10, a Pentium dual core E2220 or Athlon 64 X2 5000+ class processor, 2 GB of RAM, a GeForce 8600 GT (512 MB) or Radeon HD 4670 (512 MB) with DirectX 11, and 1200 MB of storage. Its humor is risqué, as it was in the 1990s.

No demo on Steam on 5 November 2026; Windows only. It costs $19.99.

ULTRAKILL

Play it if you have an old gaming PC with a real graphics card and want speed and style ranks, with a free demo to try first.

Arsi “Hakita” Patala’s ULTRAKILL is a fast, ultra violent retro FPS that mixes the style scoring of character action games with the carnage of the 1990s: you rip foes apart and bathe in their blood to heal. It has been in Early Access since 3 September 2020, with a free demo on Steam.

Steam’s minimum is Windows 10, a 2.4 GHz dual core processor or higher, 4 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 560 or equivalent with DirectX 11, and 3 GB of storage. At 4 GB it asks for the most RAM of the eight older games here.

Bounding Box Software’s Prodeus, in Steam’s words, is a first person shooter of old, re imagined with modern rendering techniques, with retro aesthetics and gameplay. Steam lists single player, online multiplayer and co op, and a level editor.

The minimum is Windows 7 or newer, a processor at 2 GHz or more with 4 cores, 2 GB of RAM, an NVidia GTX 580 or AMD HD 7870 with DirectX 9.0, and 4 GB of storage. Next to ULTRAKILL it names the heaviest card of the eight older games.

Reading the specs

How to read these specs

Every spec on this page is the Windows minimum from the game’s own Steam page, in the publisher’s words. Wikipedia’s article on system requirements calls such lists a guideline rather than an absolute guarantee, and that is how to take them: the least that should run the game, not a promise of smooth play. We quote only the minimum, and we did not benchmark any game on any machine.

Four lines matter. The graphics card is the one that decides most. Integrated graphics are the part of the processor that draws the picture when there is no separate card; Wikipedia’s article on the graphics processing unit explains the difference. Only Ion Fury and HROT name integrated graphics here, and a laptop without a separate card should start with those two. RAM runs from 128 MB to 8 GB in this guide. Storage is not always small for an old game: Half-Life 2 asks for 6500 MB and POSTAL 2 for 10 GB. And the graphics API matters: Iron Curtain Call needs a card with Vulkan support, which Wikipedia describes as a cross platform interface for 3D graphics.

Two games name no card at all, Ion Fury and Half-Life 2, so for those your card’s own specification is how you check. On Windows 10 and 11, Task Manager’s Performance tab shows which graphics card or integrated graphics your PC has.

Left out on purpose

Shooters people call light that Steam does not

Some games that often turn up on low spec lists did not make this one, because their own Steam minimum is not low. Cruelty Squad asks for a GeForce GTX 1050 on Windows, QUAKE for a GTX 650 TI or Radeon HD 7750 with 8 GB of RAM, AMID EVIL for a GTX 470 or Radeon 6870 HD with 8 GB, MULLET MADJACK for a GeForce 970 and 8 GB, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun for 8 GB of RAM and a card with 1 GB of VRAM. Fallen Aces names a Ryzen Z1 class processor, integrated graphics with at least 8GB of shared VRAM and 20 GB of storage.

Those are as demanding as Iron Curtain Call or more, which is the honest context for ours: a GTX 950 class card is an older card, and still not a weak PC.

Test your own PC

Not sure your PC qualifies?

Two checks cost nothing. The Iron Curtain Call demo on Steam is Mission 1, free, with no parry. And 60 seconds of Iron Curtain Call in your browser needs no download and no account, only a current desktop or laptop browser with WebGL 2, a keyboard and a mouse. It is a different build from the Steam game, so it is a hint of how the game feels on your machine and not proof that the full game runs.

More lists: free FPS and boomer shooter demos on Steam and fast FPS games like ULTRAKILL and MULLET MADJACK.

Questions

Questions players ask

Can I play an FPS on a laptop with integrated graphics?

Some of these, by Steam’s own text. Ion Fury says Intel integrated graphics are supported, and HROT lists an Intel HD 4400, an Intel integrated part. The other games here ask for a graphics card. Iron Curtain Call asks for a GTX 950 or RX 460 with 2 GB and Vulkan on Windows, so do not count on integrated graphics there. On a Mac, an Apple M1 has integrated graphics, and that is the minimum Steam lists for the game.

How much RAM do I need for a low end PC shooter?

By Steam’s minimums: POSTAL 2 asks for 128 MB, Half-Life 2 for 512 MB, Ion Fury for 1024 MB, DUSK, HROT, Prodeus and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour for 2 GB, and ULTRAKILL for 4 GB. So 4 GB covers the eight older games on paper. Iron Curtain Call asks for 8 GB.

Will Iron Curtain Call run on my low end PC?

Steam’s minimum is Windows 10 64 bit, an Intel Core i5 4460 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 950 or RX 460 with 2 GB and Vulkan, and 2 GB of storage, with a Performance mode for minimum spec PCs. If your card is older or you only have integrated graphics on Windows, try the free demo on Steam before you decide; the full game comes out on 11 March 2027.

Which of these has the lowest minimum spec?

No game is the lowest on every line. POSTAL 2 asks for the least RAM and graphics card (128 MB and a 32MB card), Ion Fury for the least storage (100 MB) and is the one whose text says integrated graphics are supported, and HROT names an Intel HD 4400.

Which of these have a free demo?

On 5 November 2026: Iron Curtain Call, ULTRAKILL, Half-Life 2 and HROT. The Iron Curtain Call demo is Mission 1, about 15 to 20 minutes, without the parry, which comes with the full game. Our list of free FPS demos has more.

Do any of these run on a Mac?

On 5 November 2026 Steam listed macOS for Iron Curtain Call, DUSK and Prodeus. ULTRAKILL, HROT, Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour and the rest are for Windows, with Linux builds for Ion Fury, Half-Life 2, POSTAL 2 and DUSK.

Are these all single player shooters?

Each has a single player mode on Steam. DUSK, Prodeus and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour also list multiplayer, and Prodeus lists co op too.
