Games like Wolfenstein on PC: alternate history and single player FPS campaigns on Steam

By Ekin, a solo developer in Istanbul, the one person behind Whale Development Studios and Iron Curtain Call. Published 8 November 2026. Every date, price, platform and demo below was checked on the US Steam store and Wikipedia on 8 November 2026; the sources are listed at the end.

Iron Curtain Call in first person: Corporal Punishment fires a submachine gun at wind up tin soldiers inside the 6:15 Express train car
Iron Curtain Call, a real gameplay frame aboard the 6:15 Express. An alternate 1965 war against a mechanical regime, played for comedy.
The short answer

An alternate history regime, a mechanical army and a single player campaign.

When players search for games like Wolfenstein on PC, they usually mean the modern single player campaigns built by MachineGames (Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus): a linear, story driven first person shooter set in an alternate history 1960s where a totalitarian war machine rules with oversized guns and giant robots, and one stubborn soldier fights back.

If you missed one of the MachineGames entries, start there: Wolfenstein: The New Order ($19.99), its 1946 prequel Wolfenstein: The Old Blood ($19.99) and its 1961 sequel Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus ($39.99, which has a free Steam demo) form one continuous arc. Outside the series, Atomic Heart ($59.99, free demo) swaps 1960s Europe for an alternate 1950s Soviet facility overrun by rebel robots, Metro Exodus ($29.99) delivers a story heavy single player shooter across a ruined Russia, BioShock Infinite ($29.99) takes the fight to an authoritarian 1912 sky city, Half-Life 2 ($9.99, free demo) remains the benchmark for a resistance campaign against an occupying regime, and Iron Storm ($2.99) imagines a First World War that never ended by 1964.

My game, Iron Curtain Call (full release 11 March 2027, free demo on Steam now), takes the 1960s mechanical regime premise and plays it as a 1930s rubber hose cartoon comedy: it is 1965, World War III is run by a customer service AI called the Supreme Chancellor, and every enemy is a wind up tin robot that bursts into bolts and springs.

The games

One by one, who each campaign is for.

Every game below is a single player shooter you can play on Steam without touching a multiplayer lobby. Facts come from the US Steam store and Wikipedia on 8 November 2026.

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want a 1960s war against a regime’s mechanical army, turned into a fast 1930s cartoon comedy you can try free right now.

Iron Curtain Call is my game: a single player cartoon noir first person shooter set in an alternate 1965, year three of World War III. Humanity ran out of soldiers, so the war is fought by wind up tin robots commanded by the Supreme Chancellor, a customer service machine that was handed a country. You play Corporal Punishment, delivered to the front like cargo while Colonel Panic briefs you over the radio.

What it shares with Wolfenstein is the pleasure of tearing through a regime’s mechanical war machine in an alternate 1960s with a loud arsenal (eleven guns and a freeze grenade in the full game, starting with The Diplomat shotgun and The Typewriter submachine gun). What differs is the tone and pace: instead of grim alternate history drama, it is drawn like a 1930s rubber hose cartoon where robots burst into bolts, springs and scrap with no blood or gore, and punching staggered machines restores your health.

The free Steam demo is Mission 1, Welcome to Rubbleton (about 15 to 20 minutes, ending with the first boss, Major Disaster), for Windows, macOS and Linux; or play 60 seconds in your browser. The parry arrives with the full game on 11 March 2027.

Iron Curtain Call in first person: a cartoon glove punches a tin robot apart in a snowy night market, a shotgun in the other hand, under the comic words SHATTERED! and SHAKE WELL!
Iron Curtain Call, a real gameplay frame. Mechanical soldiers burst into bolts, springs and scrap.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Play it if you want the foundational modern Wolfenstein campaign and have not played it yet.

MachineGames’ Wolfenstein: The New Order (released 19 May 2014) restarted the series as a character driven single player shooter. Per Steam and Wikipedia, it follows William “BJ” Blazkowicz waking from a fourteen year coma into an alternate 1960s Europe where the Nazis won World War II using advanced robots and stolen technology.

You raid fortresses, prisons and a lunar base alongside the Kreisau Circle resistance, switching between dual wielded automatic rifles, laser cutters and stealth takedowns.

On Steam at $19.99, for Windows, with no demo on 8 November 2026. Serious war drama where Iron Curtain Call is 1965 cartoon satire.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Play it if you want the bigger, louder 1961 sequel and want to test a free Steam demo first.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (released 26 October 2017) picks up immediately after The New Order and moves the fight to an occupied 1961 United States. Steam describes recruiting resistance leaders from Roswell to New Orleans and Manhattan while wielding heavy weapons such as the Laserkraftwerk and Dieselkraftwerk.

Unlike The New Order and The Old Blood, The New Colossus has a free standalone demo on Steam covering the opening level.

On Steam at $39.99, for Windows, with a free Windows demo on 8 November 2026.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

Play it if you want classic Castle Wolfenstein corridors, occult secrets and a tighter standalone prequel.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (released 4 May 2015) is MachineGames’ standalone prequel set in 1946. Per Steam and Wikipedia, its eight chapters split into two interconnected stories: breaking into Castle Wolfenstein in Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves, and uncovering occult artifacts in Wulfburg in The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs.

Because it was built as a focused two part campaign, it gets straight to the gunfights and stealth arenas with very little downtime.

On Steam at $19.99, for Windows, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

Atomic Heart

Play it if you want an alternate 1950s superpower whose robots have gone rogue, with a free Steam demo.

Mundfish’s Atomic Heart (released 20 February 2023) is set in Facility 3826 in an alternate history 1950s Soviet Union, per Wikipedia and Steam. You play Major P3, sent to contain a sudden rebellion of service and combat robots using firearms, melee blades and an experimental Polymer glove.

For players who liked Wolfenstein’s alternate mid century technology and mechanical enemies, Atomic Heart is the closest modern big budget match on Steam.

On Steam at $59.99, for Windows, with a free Windows demo on 8 November 2026. For more in this vein, see my Games Like Atomic Heart guide.

Metro Exodus

Play it if you want a long, cinematic single player shooter campaign with a crew you travel with across a ruined continent.

4A Games’ Metro Exodus (released on Steam on 14 February 2020) takes Artyom and the Spartan Rangers out of the Moscow Metro tunnels and across Russia aboard the Aurora steam locomotive. Per Steam and Wikipedia, it blends linear story bunker levels with large seasonal regions where you scavenge parts and modify weapons in the field.

While its setting is post nuclear rather than alternate 1960s, its pacing, resistance camaraderie and heavy first person gunfeel appeal to the same single player crowd as MachineGames’ Wolfenstein.

BioShock Infinite

Play it if you want an alternate history shooter with a strong story, heavy gunfights and macOS support.

Irrational Games’ BioShock Infinite (released 25 March 2013) sends Booker DeWitt to the 1912 floating city of Columbia to rescue Elizabeth. Per Wikipedia and Steam, you fight through an authoritarian American breakaway state and its mechanical Heavy Hitters (including Motorized Patriots and the giant robotic Songbird) using guns, Sky Line hooks and vigor powers.

It shares Wolfenstein’s focus on fighting through a propaganda soaked alternate history regime while keeping a brisk, linear campaign structure.

Half-Life 2

Play it if you want the classic single player uprising against a totalitarian regime, with a free demo and low hardware needs.

Valve’s Half-Life 2 (released 16 November 2004) casts Gordon Freeman as the spearhead of a human resistance inside City 17 against the alien Combine occupation. Per Wikipedia, its seamless single player campaign chains urban street battles, coastal highway runs, Ravenholm and an assault on the Citadel without a single cutscene camera break.

Every modern story driven resistance shooter, including MachineGames’ Wolfenstein reboot, owes part of its structure to Half-Life 2.

Iron Storm

Play it if you want a budget retro curiosity about a 1960s European war that never stopped.

Iron Storm (first released in 2002, on Steam since 8 May 2014) is set in an alternate 1964 where World War I has lasted fifty years. You play Lieutenant James Anderson infiltrating Russo Mongolian trenches and laboratories to stop a nuclear weapon project.

It is an older, rougher game than the modern blockbusters here, priced at $2.99 on Steam.

Where to start

Which order to play the modern Wolfenstein games

If you are new to MachineGames’ reboot trilogy on Steam, release order and story order differ slightly. Wolfenstein: The New Order ($19.99) came first and introduces the 1960s world and cast; Wolfenstein: The Old Blood ($19.99) is a standalone 1946 prequel whose ending leads directly into the opening mission of The New Order; Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus ($39.99) continues the story in 1961 America.

If you already finished all three and want more alternate history shooters on PC, check my Alternate History FPS Games guide and my Video Games Set in the 1960s guide, or try 60 seconds of Iron Curtain Call in your browser.

What are the best games like Wolfenstein on Steam?

For an alternate history shooter where you fight a regime’s robots, Atomic Heart ($59.99, free demo) and Iron Curtain Call (my game, releasing 11 March 2027, free demo now) are the direct matches. For a story driven single player FPS campaign against an authoritarian state, Half-Life 2 ($9.99, free demo), BioShock Infinite ($29.99) and Metro Exodus ($29.99) are the closest on Steam.

Which games like Wolfenstein have a free demo on Steam?

On 8 November 2026 four games on this page had a free demo on Steam: Iron Curtain Call (Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a 60 second browser trial), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Windows), Atomic Heart (Windows) and Half-Life 2 (Windows).

Should I play Wolfenstein: The New Order or The Old Blood first?

Either works: The Old Blood is set in 1946 right before The New Order’s opening chapter, while The New Order was released first in 2014 and introduces the mechanics and overarching story before moving to the 1960s. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus should be played after The New Order.

Which games like Wolfenstein run on a Mac?
