Games like High On Life on PC: comedy shooters, talking weapons and absurd worlds on Steam

By Ekin, a solo developer in Istanbul, the one person behind Whale Development Studios and Iron Curtain Call. Published 8 November 2026. Every date, price, platform and demo below was checked on the US Steam store and Wikipedia on 8 November 2026; the sources are listed at the end.

Iron Curtain Call in first person: Corporal Punishment fires the Party Line submachine gun at tin robots in a cartoon street
Iron Curtain Call, a real gameplay frame. An absurd arsenal, constant radio banter and twelve cartoon chapters.
The short answer

Talking weapons, constant banter and shooters that play for laughs.

Per its Steam page and Wikipedia, Squanch Games’ High On Life (released 13 December 2022, $39.99 on Steam for Windows) built its following on a rare mix: a single player first person shooter where charismatic talking guns comment on everything you do, each weapon doubles as a traversal or puzzle tool (like Knifey’s grapple tether), and every boss fight is an extended comedy routine.

First, check whether you played its direct sequel: High On Life 2 ($39.99, released 13 February 2026 on Steam for Windows) is already out and has a free demo on Steam. Beyond Squanch Games, Iron Curtain Call (my game, full release 11 March 2027, free demo on Steam now) is a single player comedy FPS with close to 3,000 voiced lines, Colonel Panic wisecracking on your radio, a Supreme Chancellor that runs World War III like a customer service hotline, and a chapter where your gun talks back. Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition ($39.99) pairs pulp sci fi banter with a leash and a Skillshot combo system, Borderlands 2 ($19.99) brings cartoon cel shading and villain Handsome Jack on your radio, and Shadow Warrior ($29.99) pairs Lo Wang with the wisecracking demon Hoji.

For weird indie comedy shooters, Void Bastards ($29.99) mocks British bureaucracy inside a comic book spaceship fleet, Fashion Police Squad ($19.99) replaces bullets with tailoring tools, and POSTAL 2 ($9.99) is open world dark satire. Two of the nine games below had a free demo on Steam on 8 November 2026: Iron Curtain Call and High On Life 2.

The games

One by one, who each comedy shooter is for.

Every game below puts humor at the front of a first person shooter, from voiced companions and talking weapons to visual slapstick. Facts come from the US Steam store and Wikipedia on 8 November 2026.

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want nonstop voiced comedy, absurd weapons and a grappling hook inside a 1930s cartoon Cold War, and you want a free demo first.

Iron Curtain Call is my game: a single player cartoon noir first person shooter set in an alternate 1965, year three of World War III. Humanity ran out of soldiers, so the war is fought by wind up tin robots commanded by the Supreme Chancellor, a customer service AI that puts nations on hold. You play Corporal Punishment, while Colonel Panic fills your radio (“I’d send backup, but you are the backup”) across twelve chapters and close to 3,000 voiced lines.

What it shares with High On Life is the commitment to making every weapon and boss part of the joke: you fire a shotgun called The Diplomat, a submachine gun called The Typewriter, a rocket launcher called The Care Package and a lightning weapon called The Telegram, and each chapter ends with a theatrical boss like Major Disaster (seventeen medals, all self awarded). Instead of alien slime, it is drawn like a 1930s rubber hose cartoon where tin robots burst into bolts, springs and scrap.

The free demo on Steam is Mission 1, Welcome to Rubbleton (about 15 to 20 minutes, ending with Major Disaster), for Windows, macOS and Linux; or play 60 seconds in your browser. The full twelve chapter campaign arrives on 11 March 2027.

High On Life

Play it if you have not played the original talking gun bounty hunter campaign on Steam yet.

Squanch Games’ High On Life (released 13 December 2022) drops a fresh high school graduate into an alien invasion where humans are being harvested by the G3 Cartel, per Steam and Wikipedia. You rescue talking biomechanical guns called Gatlians, each with its own voice actor, personality and alternate fire mode, and use Knifey to grapple across colorful alien biomes.

It is the reference point for this page: a linear, story driven comedy FPS where the weapons never stop talking.

On Steam at $39.99, for Windows, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

High On Life 2

Play it if you finished the first High On Life and want the direct sequel, or want to test its free Steam demo.

Squanch Games’ High On Life 2 (released 13 February 2026) continues the bounty hunter story five years later against an intergalactic pharmaceutical conglomerate, per Wikipedia and Steam, bringing back talking alien weapons and adding a skateboard for traversal.

Unlike the first game, High On Life 2 had a free demo live on the US Steam store on 8 November 2026.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition

Play it if you liked Knifey’s grapple tether in High On Life and want an entire shooter built around yanking, kicking and launching enemies.

People Can Fly’s Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition (first released in 2011, this edition on Steam since 7 April 2017) follows exiled space pirate Grayson Hunt across the resort planet Stygia. Per Wikipedia and Steam, its energy leash pulls enemies into slow motion kicks, cacti, electrical panels and carnivorous plants, rewarding points for more than a hundred named Skillshots.

Its combination of loud pulp sci fi dialogue and tether based crowd control makes it one of High On Life’s closest mechanical relatives.

On Steam at $39.99, for Windows, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

Borderlands 2

Play it if you want dozens of hours of cartoon comedy, radio villainy and bizarre guns, solo or with friends.

Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 2 (released 17 September 2012) puts you on Pandora against Handsome Jack, who taunts you over the ECHO radio throughout the campaign, per Wikipedia. A handful of unique guns in its loot pool even talk or scream when fired and reloaded.

Where High On Life is a compact story campaign, Borderlands 2 is a sprawling looter shooter RPG with skill trees and co op.

On Steam at $19.99, for Windows, macOS and Linux, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

Shadow Warrior

Play it if you want a buddy comedy inside your own head, paired with katana combat and dash movement.

Flying Wild Hog’s Shadow Warrior reboot (released 26 September 2013) pairs corporate shogunate assassin Lo Wang with Hoji, a smart mouthed banished demon bound to him, per Wikipedia and Steam. The two bicker through the entire campaign while you slice through demons with a katana and heavy firearms.

That constant two person banter gives the campaign the same chatty rhythm as carrying Kenny in High On Life.

On Steam at $29.99, for Windows, macOS and Linux, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

POSTAL 2

Play it if you want crude, unhinged open world satire on a small budget.

Running With Scissors’ POSTAL 2 (on Steam since 2 November 2012) hands the Postal Dude a list of everyday chores across five days in Paradise, Arizona, per Steam and Wikipedia, and lets you decide whether to wait patiently in line or turn the town into slapstick chaos.

Its humor is much cruder and more chaotic than Squanch Games’ scripted sci fi gags, priced at $9.99 on Steam.

On Steam at $9.99, for Windows and Linux, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

Void Bastards

Play it if you want dry, bureaucratic sci fi comedy where an institutional AI treats your death as paperwork.

Blue Manchu’s Void Bastards (released 28 May 2019) is a comic book strategy shooter inspired by BioShock and System Shock 2, per Steam and Wikipedia. When your prisoner dies aboard a derelict spaceship, the ship’s computer simply rehydrates the next disposable convict in line.

If your favorite jokes in High On Life were the bureaucratic signs and corporate announcements, Void Bastards leans all the way into that deadpan British humor.

On Steam at $29.99, for Windows and macOS, with no demo on 8 November 2026.

Fashion Police Squad

Play it if you want a wholesome, bright comedy FPS where every weapon is a tailoring pun.

Mopeful Games’ Fashion Police Squad (released 15 August 2022) casts you as Sergeant Des cleaning up Trendopolis with a 2D Dye Carbine, a sewing machine submachine gun and a Belt of Justice that swings you across arenas, per Steam.

Like High On Life, each enemy type asks for a specific weapon counter and every boss fight is played for laughs, without any gore.
