Dieselpunk and atompunk FPS games: vacuum tubes, steel and alternate wars

By Ekin, a solo developer in Istanbul (Whale Development Studios), maker of Iron Curtain Call. Published 8 November 2026; every price, release date and platform below was checked on 8 November 2026 against the US Steam store and the sources at the end.

Iron Curtain Call in first person: fighting tin robots aboard a giant rigid airship high above the clouds
Iron Curtain Call, chapter 9, Trickle Down: Zeppelin Summit. Rigid airships, brass rivets and 1965 atompunk computers.
The short answer

Where dieselpunk ends and atompunk begins.

Dieselpunk imagines a world stuck in the heavy steel, internal combustion engines, rivets and airships of the 1910s to 1940s. Atompunk pushes forward into the 1950s and 1960s: chrome fins, vacuum tube computers, magnetic tape reels and the Space Race before the silicon microchip.

For pure heavy steel dieselpunk in first person, play Wolfenstein: The New Order ($19.99), its prequel Wolfenstein: The Old Blood ($19.99) and the 1964 trench war shooter Iron Storm ($2.99). For 1920s dieselpunk mechs in strategy form, look at Iron Harvest ($29.99).

For mid century atompunk in first person, play Atomic Heart ($59.99, free demo on Steam), Fallout 4 ($19.99), BioShock Remastered ($19.99), INDUSTRIA ($19.99) and the free Steam demo of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027 on Windows and macOS, demo on Linux too, plus a 60 second browser version), which blends 1930s rubber hose dieselpunk trains and zeppelins with 1965 punch card mainframes.

Nine dieselpunk and atompunk worlds on Steam

Each entry notes the exact technological era and how its weapons and machines play.

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want armoured steam trains, rigid zeppelins, reel to reel tape computers and wind up tin soldiers in one fast cartoon shooter.

Iron Curtain Call is set in 1965, year three of World War III, inside a country run by a room sized punch card computer called the Supreme Chancellor. Because the war aesthetic is drawn like a 1930s rubber hose cartoon, its technology spans both eras: you fight across the 6:15 Express steam locomotive in Chapter 1, smash a vacuum tube mainframe boss (the Motherboard) in Chapter 2, brawl atop a rigid zeppelin in Chapter 9, and board a Space Race moon rocket in Chapter 10.

Even your arsenal is mid century office and industrial machinery: the Typewriter submachine gun, the Party Line rotary telephone weapon and the Can Opener saw.

Play Mission 1 free in the Steam demo (Windows, macOS, Linux) or try 60 seconds in your browser.

Play it if you want gleaming 1950s Soviet space age laboratories and haywire service robots.

Mundfish released Atomic Heart on 20 February 2023 ($59.99, free demo on Steam). Facility 3826 is pure atompunk: red and cream monorails, solar collectors, retro television terminals and moustachioed Vovchik androids.

1960 heavy dieselpunk · Concrete and steel walkers

Play it if you want brutalist steel war machines, diesel submarines and dual wielded assault rifles.

MachineGames released Wolfenstein: The New Order on 19 May 2014 ($19.99). Its 1960 regime runs on thick welded steel plates, mechanical Panzerhund hounds and oversized diesel turbines, before leaping into atompunk for a 1960 lunar base raid.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

Play it if you want raw 1940s dieselpunk where heavy troopers are plugged into ceiling power cables.

Released on 4 May 2015 ($19.99), Wolfenstein: The Old Blood dials the technology back from 1960 to 1946: Alpine cable cars, two steel pipes you pry doors open with, and hulking Übersoldaten wired directly to overhead electrical rails.

A tight, self contained eight chapter prequel.

BioShock Remastered (15 September 2016, $19.99, Windows and macOS) builds its underwater city of Rapture out of heavy brass valves, pneumatic cash tubes, vacuum tube radios and the iconic riveted diving suits of the Big Daddies.

Fallout 4

The atompunk gold standard · Nuclear cars and Pip Boys

Play it if you want 100 hours in a world where the transistor was never invented and every car runs on a mini nuclear reactor.

Bethesda Game Studios released Fallout 4 on 9 November 2015 ($19.99). Its pre war Boston is locked in 1950s American atompunk: cathode ray green monitors, Mr. Handy household jets, Corvega tailfins and step in T 60 Power Armor frames.

More open world RPG than linear shooter; see our retro futuristic games guide for more.

Iron Storm

1964 trench dieselpunk · A 50 year First World War

Play it if you want an old school curiosity where 1914 trench warfare lasted into the 1960s.

4X Studios released Iron Storm in 2002 (on Steam 8 May 2014, $2.99). In its 1964, the First World War never ended, producing a grimy hybrid of mustard gas trenches, tracked tanks, helicopters and stock market war bonds.

Dated 2002 mechanics, but a pure dieselpunk premise.

Iron Harvest

1920+ dieselpunk mechs · Strategy reference point

Play it if you love smoke belching walking tanks in 1920s fields and don’t mind switching from FPS to real time strategy.

KING Art released Iron Harvest on 31 August 2020 ($29.99), set in Jakub Różalski’s 1920+ universe where peasant villages sit beneath towering riveted diesel mechs.

The only non shooter on this page, included because it defines modern 1920s dieselpunk visuals.

Questions

Questions players ask

What is the difference between dieselpunk and atompunk in games?

Dieselpunk draws on the 1910s through the 1940s: internal combustion engines, heavy riveted steel, zeppelins, trenches and Art Deco (Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, BioShock, Iron Storm). Atompunk draws on the 1950s and 1960s: nuclear optimism, chrome space age fins, vacuum tube mainframes and early robotics (Atomic Heart, Fallout 4). Iron Curtain Call blends 1930s rubber hose dieselpunk trains and airships with a 1965 atompunk computer state.

Which dieselpunk or atompunk FPS games have a free demo on Steam?

On 8 November 2026, two games on this page had a free demo on the US Steam store: Atomic Heart (Windows) and Iron Curtain Call (Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a 60 second browser version at ironcurtaincall.com/play/).

Are there upcoming dieselpunk or steampunk FPS games in 2027?

Yes: Iron Curtain Call launches on 11 March 2027, and inXile’s steampunk time bending shooter Clockwork Revolution and Ken Levine’s Judas are tracked in our upcoming games like BioShock guide.

What PC and indie games are coming out in 2027?

More than one page can hold: Steam shows a lot of PC and indie games with a 2027 date, and dates keep moving. What we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026 are the shooters and the Mac action games, in two dated lists: upcoming FPS games and upcoming Mac games. Iron Curtain Call, our own cartoon noir shooter, is due 11 March 2027 on Windows and macOS, and its free demo is on Steam now.

What games release on 11 March 2027?

Among the shooters we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026: Blood of Rations (11 March 2027) and Iron Curtain Call (My game, 11 March 2027). We only checked shooters, so this is not the full set for that day; Steam’s own Coming Soon page has the rest.

What is a good new single player FPS I can play for free right now?

Iron Curtain Call has a free demo on Steam (Mission 1, about 15 to 20 minutes) and a free 60 second browser trial with no download. It is a single player cartoon noir shooter, and it is our game, so weigh that. For other free shooters, our list of free FPS demos on Steam holds the best rated ones.
