Games like Fallen Aces and Forgive Me Father: comic book and pulp FPS games

Iron Curtain Call in first person: a white cartoon glove punches a tin soldier robot into flying bolts and springs under bold ink lines
Iron Curtain Call, chapter 1, Rubbleton: heavy ink outlines and two fisted brawling in the free demo.
The short answer

Hand inked guns, pulp streets and fists that hit like trucks.

Fallen Aces ($14.99, Early Access since 14 June 2024) and Forgive Me Father ($19.99, released 7 April 2022; sequel Forgive Me Father 2 at $24.99) proved that 2D hand drawn ink art and 1920s to 1930s pulp storytelling belong in first person shooters. One leans into crime noir brawling and immersive sim stealth; the other leans into Lovecraftian boomer shooter gunplay.

If you want a hand inked cartoon noir shooter where punching enemies is half your arsenal and you can play a free demo right now, try Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027 on Windows and macOS, with the free Steam demo on Linux too and a 60 second browser version). If you want another 1930s detective shooter with vintage ink animation, play MOUSE: P.I. For Hire ($29.99).

And if you want graphic novel ink lines, comic panels or retro boomer shooter grit, look at XIII ($12.99), The Darkness II ($29.99), Void Bastards ($29.99) and New Blood’s DUSK ($19.99, Windows, macOS and Linux).

Nine comic book and pulp shooters on Steam

Each card covers the art technique, the era and how the combat compares to Fallen Aces and Forgive Me Father.

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you love the heavy ink lines of Forgive Me Father and the punchy brawling of Fallen Aces, and want to try a free demo today.

Iron Curtain Call is drawn with thick 1930s cartoon ink lines, theatrical noir shadows and comic impact words (WALLOP!, CRACK!) that pop right into the arena when your fists land. Set in an alternate 1965 where a customer service computer runs World War III, it pits you against an army of wind up tin soldiers.

Like Fallen Aces, your fists are never a backup weapon: the Knuckle Sandwich punch heals you, the Can Opener saw rips robots open for ammo, and the Hot Take flamethrower restores armor while you fire the Typewriter submachine gun and Diplomat shotgun.

The only game in this pulp ink group with both a free Steam demo (Windows, macOS, Linux) and a 60 second browser version.

Chapter 12, Curtain Call: comic book impact lettering and two fisted melee.

Fallen Aces

1930s crime comic · Immersive noir brawler

Play it if you want to brawl through 1930s harbour docks and speakeasies with your bare knuckles and a switchblade.

Created by Trey Powell and Jason Bond and published by New Blood Interactive, Fallen Aces entered Early Access on 14 June 2024 at $14.99. Every thug, goon and weapon is a hand drawn 2D comic illustration inside sprawling 1930s city blocks.

Between missions you watch fully voiced comic book cutscenes, and inside each level you can climb fire escapes, pick locks, throw bottles or uppercut mobsters into canal water.

Forgive Me Father

1920s pulp horror · Hand drawn comic boomer shooter

Play it if you want classic 1990s shooter speed where every gun and monster is drawn like a comic book.

Byte Barrel and Fulqrum Publishing released Forgive Me Father on 7 April 2022 ($19.99). Playing as either a priest or a journalist in a 1920s Lovecraftian town, you upgrade your guns along branching comic book skill trees that turn a revolver or shotgun into eldritch weapons.

Comic speech bubbles and sound effects frame the action while a heavy guitar soundtrack drives the arenas.

Faster and more gun focused than Fallen Aces, trading immersive sim stealth for pure boomer shooter hordes.

Forgive Me Father 2

The sequel · Darker ink and bigger arenas

Play it if you finished the first Forgive Me Father and want cleaner arena design and customizable loadouts.

Released on 24 October 2024 ($24.99), Forgive Me Father 2 continues the priest’s story from an asylum hub, upgrading the engine’s lighting so dynamic shadows fall across the flat 2D comic sprites.

Instead of a fixed skill tree, you equip dark artifacts and weapon variants between missions inside the hub.

Sharpens the gunfeel and visual contrast of the first game.

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire

1930s monochrome detective FPS · Rubber hose animation

Play it if you want Fallen Aces’s 1930s private eye mood drawn like an old Mickey Mouse or Betty Boop reel.

Fumi Games released MOUSE: P.I. For Hire on 16 April 2026 ($29.99). Set in a corrupt 1930s city of cartoon animals, it pairs private eye caseboards and jazz clubs with tommy guns and slapstick cartoon gadgets.

Every character and weapon is animated in black and white 2D frames inside 3D streets.

XIII Classic

Classic comic book FPS · Onomatopoeia panels

Play it if you want a classic spy thriller where headshots open comic panels on your HUD.

Ubisoft’s 2003 cel shaded shooter XIII (on Steam 11 June 2020, $12.99) pioneered comic book framing in a first person shooter, popping three panel sequences onto the screen whenever you land a sniper shot or silent crossbow bolt.

Its 1960s conspiracy tone and bold black outlines remain timeless.

The Darkness II

Mobster graphic novel FPS · Close range executions

Play it if you want a crime syndicate story inked like a dark comic book with brutal melee finishers.

Digital Extremes and 2K released The Darkness II on 9 February 2012 ($29.99). Adapted from the Top Cow comic book series, it paints every character with hand inked crosshatching while you fight rival mobsters using firearms and twin demon tentacles.

Grabbing enemies up close to restore health gives it a fierce forward rhythm.

Bridges the crime world of Fallen Aces with the supernatural powers of Forgive Me Father.

Void Bastards

British comic book FPS · Tactical ship boarding

Play it if you love comic book panels, dry bureaucratic humour and resource management.

Blue Manchu released Void Bastards on 28 May 2019 ($29.99, Windows and macOS), directed by BioShock and System Shock 2 co creator Jonathan Chey. Every enemy is a flat 2D comic sprite floating inside 3D spaceships, and footsteps appear as visual comic words through walls.

When your prisoner dies, the prison computer prints out the next disposable inmate with new traits.

Shares Iron Curtain Call’s love for cold, bureaucratic computer comedy.

DUSK

New Blood classic · Fast occult boomer shooter

Play it if you came from Fallen Aces or Forgive Me Father looking for the sharpest retro shooter level design.

David Szymanski and New Blood Interactive released DUSK on 10 December 2018 ($19.99, Windows, macOS and Linux). While it uses late 1990s polygons rather than 2D comic sprites, its cultist farmsteads, Lovecraftian mines and effortless strafe jumping make it the gold standard for modern retro shooters.

Like Forgive Me Father, its third episode descends into eldritch horror without ever slowing your movement.
