The short answer

The nine games at a glance

Most shooters treat your melee button as a desperate last resort when your magazine runs dry. Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition and Anger Foot flipped that hierarchy upside down: your boot kick is the opening move of every fight, launching enemies through doors, into electrical hazards or across the room in slow motion so your guns can finish the combo. While building Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I gave the player a dedicated melee bash and grapple combo that knocks wind up tin troopers into pieces for health and ammo, so I put together this guide to the nine best kick and combo shooters on Steam.

If you want the pure boot first room clearing loop where kicking doors and enemies is stronger than your pistol, play Anger Foot ($19.99, free demo on Steam) and MULLET MADJACK ($19.99, free demo on Steam). If you want the original leash and kick Skillshot spectacle across a giant sci fi planet, play Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition ($39.99). If you want heavy melee finishers, shield bashes and grapples woven into high speed arena combat, play DOOM Eternal ($29.99), DOOM: The Dark Ages ($49.99), POSTAL: Brain Damaged ($19.99, free demo) and Roboquest ($24.99, free demo). And if you want a 1930s rubber hose cartoon shooter where punching, grappling and parrying tin robots keeps you alive in an absurd 1965 World War III, try the free Steam demo or 60 second browser trial of my game Iron Curtain Call (releasing 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want a 1930s rubber hose cartoon shooter where punching and parrying tin robots fuels your guns.

I am building Iron Curtain Call around a simple rule: backing away behind cover gets you killed, and closing the gap with your white gloved cartoon fist keeps you alive. You dash and grapple into wind up tin soldiers, parry incoming projectiles back into the crowd, and wallop staggered robots so they burst into bolts, springs and ammo pickups while the Supreme Chancellor’s customer service loudspeakers lecture you. Mission 1 is free on Steam right now for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a 60 second trial runs in your browser.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition

Play it if you want the benchmark leash, kick and environmental Skillshot campaign.

People Can Fly’s Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition (7 April 2017, $39.99) remains the gold standard for environmental improvisation in a first person shooter. Your left hand fires a gravity leash that yanks enemies off catwalks, and your boot sends them floating in slow motion toward spiked cacti, exposed fuse boxes or spinning turbines while the Skillshot scoreboard rewards every creative combination with upgrade points.

Anger Foot

Play it if you want a bass thumping shooter where your foot is deadlier than your firearm.

Free Lives’ Anger Foot (11 July 2024, $19.99, with a free demo on Steam) turns kicking down apartment doors into an entire combat language. One boot kick splinters a wooden door into the gangster standing behind it, sends anthropomorphic thugs flying out of high rise windows, and triggers wearable sneaker modifiers that change how every room plays.

MULLET MADJACK

Hammer95’s MULLET MADJACK (15 May 2024, $19.99, free demo on Steam) gives you exactly ten seconds of dopamine on your health clock and rewards you with extra seconds when you kick billionaire robots into neon signs, arcade cabinets and open elevator shafts. DOOM Eternal

Play it if you want high speed arena combat where melee finishers and Blood Punches refill your health.

id Software’s DOOM Eternal (19 March 2020, $29.99) turned melee from an optional animation into the heartbeat of modern FPS resource management. You grapple into airborne demons with the Super Shotgun’s Meathook, shatter armour with a charged Blood Punch, and trigger Glory Kill finishers to shower the floor with health.

POSTAL: Brain Damaged

Play it if you want a fast boomer shooter with a heavy boot kick, grapple hook and surreal comedy.

Hyperstrange and CreativeForge Games built POSTAL: Brain Damaged (9 June 2022, $19.99, free demo on Steam) as a high speed spin off where you can kick enemies across dreamscape arenas, slide into their shins, and launch yourself off a shotgun grappling hook. It plays far closer to Bulletstorm and Quake than to the slower open world POSTAL entries.

DOOM: The Dark Ages

Play it if you want a heavy Shield Saw bash, projectile parry and medieval flail in a blockbuster FPS.

id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages (14 May 2025, $49.99) trades aerial acrobatics for a planted, bruising brawl: you charge straight through demon ranks with a revving Shield Saw, parry green hellfire projectiles back at their senders, and crush staggered heavies with an iron flail or spiked mace.

Why the boot works

Why a good kick or punch transforms a first person shooter

In a traditional cover shooter, an enemy who gets within two metres of your camera is a problem: your field of view narrows and you backpedal while reloading. In a kick and bash shooter like Bulletstorm, Anger Foot or Iron Curtain Call, an enemy within two metres is an opportunity.

Crowd control without swapping weapons. A boot kick or cartoon glove punch interrupts an enemy’s attack animation instantly and turns their body into a projectile that staggers the enemies behind them.

Forward momentum instead of cover peeking. When melee hits drop health, ammo or timer extensions, the safest direction when you are hurt is straight into the nearest enemy.

What we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026 are the shooters and the Mac action games, in two dated lists: upcoming FPS games and upcoming Mac games.
