The short answer

The nine games at a glance

The first wave of retro shooters imitated mid nineties hardware limits strictly; the second wave, led by Prodeus, Selaco and Turbo Overkill, kept the speed, readable silhouettes and secret hunting of nineties FPS design while throwing modern dynamic lighting, particle storms and thunderous weapon audio at the screen. While building Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I chased that exact hybrid philosophy: hand drawn 1930s rubber hose cartoon characters inside a modern 3D stage where every shot sends brass, bolts and sparks flying.

If you want the heaviest weapon feedback and hybrid sprite over 3D presentation, start with Prodeus ($24.99), Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun ($21.99) and Forgive Me Father 2 ($24.99). If you want tactical enemy squads and destructible rooms in a heavily modified retro engine, play Selaco ($24.99) and CULTIC ($9.99, free demo on Steam). If you want blistering movement and hundreds of weapons or bionics, play Turbo Overkill ($19.99, free demo) and Nightmare Reaper ($24.99, free demo). And if you want a 1930s rubber hose cartoon shooter with a free Steam demo on Windows, macOS and Linux, play my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want hand drawn 1930s cartoon art paired with punchy modern FPS combat.

I built Iron Curtain Call in Godot 4.7 so that every enemy, boss and weapon carries the bold ink lines of a 1930s rubber hose cartoon while the stage around you reacts with modern lighting, explosions and flying mechanical parts. You can test Mission 1 free on Steam right now on Windows, macOS and Linux, or play 60 seconds in your browser.

Why 2.5D and inked art work at high speed

Why stylised sprites and ink outlines beat photorealism in fast shooters

When you are moving at forty miles an hour in a shooter, photorealistic camouflage makes enemies blend into grey walls. Bold pixel sprites (Prodeus, Selaco, Boltgun) and thick hand drawn ink outlines (Forgive Me Father 2, Iron Curtain Call) let your eye read every enemy silhouette and attack animation in a fraction of a second.
