Games like TimeSplitters and GoldenEye: mission based arcade FPS games

By Ekin, a solo developer in Istanbul (Whale Development Studios), maker of Iron Curtain Call. Published 8 November 2026; every price, release date and platform below was checked on 8 November 2026 against the US Steam store and the sources at the end.

Mission based Cold War action aboard the 6:15 Express in Iron Curtain Call
Iron Curtain Call structures its 12 chapters like classic mission based shooters: train infiltrations, ministry raids and theatrical bosses.
The short answer

The nine games at a glance

A whole generation of shooter players still misses the specific magic of TimeSplitters and GoldenEye 007: handcrafted, self contained single player missions in distinct locales (trains, dams, secret ministries), expressive stylized characters, and fast arcade gunplay that never takes itself too seriously. When I built Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I structured its twelve chapters around that same mission briefing energy, starting right in Chapter 1 aboard the 6:15 Express.

If you want a direct N64 spy shooter homage built around secret objectives and difficulty modifiers, start with Agent 64: Spies Never Die ($21.64) and the cel shaded espionage classic XIII Classic ($12.99). If you want stylized cartoon or comic book missions across trains, docks and neon towers, play Fallen Aces ($14.99), MOUSE: P.I. For Hire ($29.99) and MULLET MADJACK ($19.99, free demo on Steam). If you want tactical facility infiltrations and mission based retro firefights, play Selaco ($24.99), Trepang2 ($39.99) and Ion Fury ($24.99). And if you want a 1965 Cold War mission shooter drawn like a 1930s cartoon, play the free Steam demo of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want expressive cartoon characters, wacky weapons and distinct Cold War set piece chapters.

Like TimeSplitters, Iron Curtain Call treats every chapter as a theatrical comedy action set piece: you crash land in Rubbleton, battle across the roof of the 6:15 Express, raid the Ministry of Truth, and face twelve larger than life bosses with eleven weapons. Mission 1 is free on Steam right now for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a 60 second browser trial runs at /play/.

Why mission based shooters age so well

A great train or bunker level beats a hundred miles of empty open world

Players still remember the train in GoldenEye, the Siberia dam in TimeSplitters 2 and the cable car in XIII because handcrafted missions can pace every ambush, gag and boss fight down to the second.

Questions

Questions players ask about games like TimeSplitters and GoldenEye

Which mission based arcade FPS games on this page have a free demo on Steam?

Two games in this guide have a free playable demo on Steam right now: Iron Curtain Call (Mission 1 on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a 60 second browser trial) and MULLET MADJACK (Windows).

What PC game is closest to GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark?

Agent 64: Spies Never Die ($21.64) is a direct mechanical homage to GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, while XIII Classic ($12.99) and Iron Curtain Call bring spy and Cold War mission structure into stylized comic and cartoon worlds.

What PC and indie games are coming out in 2027?

More than one page can hold: Steam shows a lot of PC and indie games with a 2027 date, and dates keep moving. What we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026 are the shooters and the Mac action games, in two dated lists: upcoming FPS games and upcoming Mac games. Iron Curtain Call, our own cartoon noir shooter, is due 11 March 2027 on Windows and macOS, and its free demo is on Steam now.

What games release on 11 March 2027?

Among the shooters we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026: Blood of Rations (11 March 2027) and Iron Curtain Call (My game, 11 March 2027). We only checked shooters, so this is not the full set for that day; Steam’s own Coming Soon page has the rest.

What is a good new single player FPS I can play for free right now?

Iron Curtain Call has a free demo on Steam (Mission 1, about 15 to 20 minutes) and a free 60 second browser trial with no download. It is a single player cartoon noir shooter, and it is our game, so weigh that. For other free shooters, our list of free FPS demos on Steam holds the best rated ones.
