The short answer

The nine games at a glance

The single best mechanical revolution in modern shooters is push forward combat, where low health is not a signal to crouch behind a crate and wait, but an invitation to charge the nearest enemy and crack them open like a piñata for health and ammunition. When I built Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I wired the entire combat economy around that rule: dashing in to punch, parry and shatter wind up tin robots showers the arena with health and ammo.

If you want the id Software titles that codified the Glory Kill and chainsaw resource loop, start with DOOM Eternal ($29.99) and DOOM ($19.99). If you want indie movement shooters where close range aggression directly heals you or extends your life clock, play ULTRAKILL ($29.99, free demo on Steam), MULLET MADJACK ($19.99, free demo on Steam), Turbo Overkill ($19.99, free demo on Steam) and Roboquest ($24.99, free demo on Steam). If you want heavy Warhammer chainswords or industrial boomer arenas, play Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun ($21.99) and Prodeus ($24.99). And if you want a 1930s rubber hose cartoon push forward shooter with a free demo on Windows, macOS and Linux right now, play my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want a 1930s cartoon shooter where smashing robots up close refills your health and ammo.

In Iron Curtain Call, the safest place when your health bar drops is two feet in front of a wind up tin soldier: you dash in, parry its projectile or deliver a gloved cartoon punch, and watch it burst into springs, health and ammunition. Mission 1 is free on Steam right now for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a 60 second browser trial runs at /play/.

The golden rule of push forward design

When low health means charge forward, every comeback feels heroic

In a cover shooter, surviving at ten percent health means staring at a concrete wall for eight seconds. In a push forward shooter like DOOM Eternal, ULTRAKILL or Iron Curtain Call, surviving at ten percent health means dashing into the middle of three enemies and winning.
