The short answer

The nine games at a glance

When PC players look for the best 90s FPS remakes, remasters and spiritual successors on Steam, they want the level design clarity, secret hunting and full weapon wheels of 1993 to 1999 running cleanly at high refresh rates on modern monitors. While building Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I built its twelve chapters around that same nineties design DNA (non regenerating health, eleven guns on a weapon wheel, expressive boss arenas) combined with 1930s rubber hose cartoon art.

If you want full ground up remakes that rebuild 1990s landmarks in modern engines, start with Black Mesa ($19.99, remake of 1998 Half Life) and System Shock ($39.99, remake of 1994 System Shock). If you want official enhanced remasters with brand new expansion episodes included, play Quake ($9.99), Quake II ($9.99) and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour ($19.99). If you want modern spiritual successors to Build engine shooters, Quake and Heretic, play Ion Fury ($24.99), DUSK ($19.99) and AMID EVIL ($19.99, free demo on Steam). And if you want a new boomer shooter built with nineties rules and a free demo on Steam right now, try my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want classic nineties weapon wheel and boss design inside a brand new 1930s cartoon world.

In Iron Curtain Call, I kept the best rules of nineties shooters (no two weapon limit, no hiding behind cover for regenerating health, distinct enemy projectile patterns) and added modern dashes, grapples and parries across an absurd 1965 World War III. Mission 1 is free on Steam right now for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a 60 second browser trial runs at /play/.

Why nineties level design still wins

Readable architecture and secret hunting reward curious players

Nineties shooters did not need yellow paint or minimap arrows because their rooms were built around bold silhouettes, lighting contrasts and rewarding secret doors.

What we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026 are the shooters and the Mac action games, in two dated lists: upcoming FPS games and upcoming Mac games. Among the shooters we checked on Steam on 7 November 2026: Blood of Rations (11 March 2027) and Iron Curtain Call (My game, 11 March 2027). We only checked shooters, so this is not the full set for that day; Steam’s own Coming Soon page has the rest.
