The short answer

The nine games at a glance

In a standard shooter, the floor is where you stand and the walls are what stop you. In an acrobatic and slide kick FPS, the walls are runways, the floor is a low friction slide pad, and diving through a window at forty miles an hour makes you harder to hit than crouching behind a sandbag. When I built Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I tuned the dash, grapple hook and mid air punch so you can cross an entire propaganda plaza without losing momentum.

If you want 360 degree stunt dives, wall running and slide kicks that turn every room into an action movie set piece, start with Severed Steel ($24.99, free demo on Steam), Titanfall 2 ($29.99), SPRAWL ($14.99) and Trepang2 ($39.99). If you want chainsaw slides, sword grapples or cyberpunk movement arenas, play Turbo Overkill ($19.99, free demo on Steam), Bright Memory: Infinite ($19.99), Warstride Challenges ($19.99, free demo on Steam) and Deadlink ($24.99, free demo on Steam). And if you want acrobatic dash, grapple and parry combat inside a 1930s rubber hose cartoon world, play the free Steam demo or 60 second browser trial of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Why speed is armour

When movement is expressive, dodging is more fun than taking cover

In Severed Steel, Titanfall 2, Turbo Overkill and Iron Curtain Call, your movement kit is your primary defence: the faster you dash, slide or grapple, the harder it is for enemy projectiles to track you.
