The short answer

The nine games at a glance

A great dystopian first person shooter makes you feel the regime before a single enemy fires a shot: the giant screen in Half Life 2’s train station, the parade banners of BioShock Infinite’s Columbia, or the concrete brutalism of HROT. While building Iron Curtain Call as a solo developer in Istanbul, I took the loudspeaker police state and turned it into 1930s rubber hose cartoon satire: in my alternate 1965, an automated customer service engine called the Supreme Chancellor runs the war through polite hold music, propaganda posters and armies of wind up tin soldiers.

If you want the foundational serious dystopian FPS campaigns where you fight through an occupied city from the train station to the citadel, start with Half Life 2 ($9.99, free demo on Steam), Wolfenstein: The New Order ($19.99) and BioShock Infinite ($29.99). If you want Soviet, Eastern European or Cold War retro dystopias, play Atomic Heart ($59.99, free demo on Steam), HROT ($19.99, free demo on Steam), Metro Exodus ($29.99) and INDUSTRIA ($19.99). If you want smiling sixties state paranoia, play We Happy Few ($59.99). And if you want a fast 1930s cartoon shooter mocking authoritarian bureaucracy, try the free Steam demo or 60 second browser trial of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want a dystopian propaganda state mocked as a fast 1930s rubber hose cartoon.

In Iron Curtain Call, the totalitarian state is literally a broken customer service department: the Supreme Chancellor puts citizens on hold while wind up tin soldiers patrol Rubbleton and Major Disaster awards himself seventeen medals. You fight back by dashing, grappling, parrying and punching through twelve chapters. Mission 1 is free on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a 60 second trial runs in your browser.

Why loudspeakers matter

In a first person shooter, the city is the real antagonist

Because a first person camera keeps you inside the character’s eyes from start to finish, a dystopian city’s posters, radio broadcasts and architecture do half the storytelling while you reload. Whether it is City 17’s Breencasts or Iron Curtain Call’s customer service war bulletins, the environment gives every firefight a reason to matter.
