The short answer

The nine games at a glance

When players ask for games like Trepang2 and F.E.A.R., they are rarely asking for horror corridors alone. They want violent room breaches where every shotgun blast fills the air with smoke, sparks, paper and debris, paired with reactive enemies and acrobatic close range movement. As a solo developer in Istanbul building Iron Curtain Call, I obsessed over that exact close quarters physical feedback: when you dash into a squad of wind up soldiers and unload a submachine gun or shotgun, bolts, springs and propaganda leaflets fly across the room.

If you want the closest tactical enemy chatter, destructible office interiors and ferocious firefight feedback to F.E.A.R. and Trepang2, play Selaco ($24.99) alongside Trepang2 ($39.99) and the original F.E.A.R. ($9.99). If you want slow motion dives, wall runs and stunt gunfu, play Severed Steel ($24.99, free demo on Steam), SPRAWL ($14.99) and Bright Memory: Infinite ($19.99). If you want maximum speed and projectile parries, play ULTRAKILL ($29.99, free demo) and Titanfall 2 ($29.99). And if you want loud, physical close quarters combat inside a 1930s rubber hose cartoon Cold War, play the free Steam demo or 60 second browser trial of my game Iron Curtain Call (out 11 March 2027).

Iron Curtain Call

My game

Play it if you want explosive close range room clears in a 1930s rubber hose cartoon world.

I built Iron Curtain Call so every close range shot feels loud and physical. Instead of realistic soldiers, you breach 1965 propaganda studios and train yards packed with wind up tin robots that shatter into spinning gears, springs and scrap metal when hit at point blank range with The Diplomat shotgun or a gloved punch. You can play Mission 1 free on Steam for Windows, macOS and Linux, or jump into a 60 second browser trial.

Trepang2

Play it if you want the direct modern successor to F.E.A.R. at twice the speed.

Trepang Studios’ Trepang2 (21 June 2023, $39.99) takes the slow motion focus, optical camouflage and heavy shotgun impact of F.E.A.R. and cranks the speed to eleven. You slide kick mercenaries across darkened concrete bunkers, grab an enemy as a human shield before pulling the pin on his grenade, and dual wield shotguns in a storm of muzzle flash.

F.E.A.R.

Play it if you want the original benchmark for slow motion gunfights and reactive enemy squads.

Monolith Productions’ F.E.A.R. (21 May 2010 on Steam, $9.99) still puts most modern shooters to shame when a gunfight starts. Replica soldiers vault over desks, kick over bookshelves for cover and call out your position while your VK 12 combat shotgun turns office cubicles into clouds of plaster dust and sparks in Reflex Time.

Selaco

Play it if you want F.E.A.R. style squad AI and destructible interiors inside a retro engine.

Altered Orbit Studios’ Selaco (31 May 2024 Early Access, $24.99, native on Windows and Linux) is the closest a retro engine shooter has ever come to F.E.A.R. Enemy soldiers communicate, flank through side doors, flush you out with grenades and tear up every Burger Flipper restaurant and hospital hallway with persistent smoke, glass and debris.

Severed Steel

Play it if you want acrobatic bullet time dives and destructible voxel floors.

Greylock Studio’s Severed Steel (17 September 2021, $24.99, free demo on Steam) strips out reloading and gives you a one handed protagonist who is invulnerable while diving, flipping or wall running. When enemies lock down a doorway, you blast a hole directly through the floor with your arm cannon and drop in behind them in slow motion.

Bright Memory: Infinite

Play it if you want a solo developed spectacle shooter with sword parries and aerial combos.

Built by Zeng Xiancheng at FYQD Studio, Bright Memory: Infinite (11 November 2021, $19.99) blends high impact firearms with a supernatural blade and tractor beam arm. You yank soldiers off the ground, juggle them in mid air with sword slashes and shotgun blasts, and deflect incoming fire during stormy set pieces.

MAETH’s SPRAWL (23 August 2023, $14.99) drops you into a towering cyberpunk megacity where your cybernetic implants slow down time mid air so you can line up precision weak spot shots and use shotgun recoil to launch yourself higher up the walls.

What makes a room breach feel great

Why F.E.A.R. and Trepang2 gunfights never get old

Three things make a close quarters FPS feel electric even twenty years after F.E.A.R.:

The room reacts to every shot. Sparks, smoke, flying props and loud metallic impacts tell your eyes and ears that your weapons have weight before you ever look at a health bar.

Sliding, dashing and melee let you own the space. Whether it is Trepang2’s slide kick, Severed Steel’s dive or Iron Curtain Call’s dash and cartoon punch, you dictate the distance of the fight.
